Is Diheptyl Succinate natural?

It depends. Heptanol is not always a petrochemical oxo alcohol. Heptanal and heptanoic acid are co-produced when castor oil is pyrolysed alongside undecylenic acid, and that heptanol carries natural-origin carbon. Succinic acid is separately route-dependent, so four combinations are possible.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

RouteFeedstockNOIShareNotes
castor-derived heptanol + petrochemical succinic acidcastor oil pyrolysis heptanal/heptanol; maleic anhydride succinic acid0.63~40%, commonest combinationonly the two heptyl chains are natural origin
castor-derived heptanol + fermentation succinic acidcastor oil heptanol; bio-based succinic acid1.00~20%, growing

Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Diheptyl succinate is C18H34O4, 314.47 Da: two heptyl chains C7H15 total 198.38 Da and the succinate core with its ester oxygens is 116.09 Da. Both halves are route-dependent on this site. Castor-derived heptanol with petrochemical succinic acid gives 198.38/314.47 = 0.63; castor heptanol with fermentation succinic acid gives 1.00; oxo heptanol with fermentation succinic acid gives 116.09/314.47 = 0.37; oxo heptanol with petrochemical succinic acid gives 0.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Heptanol comes either from hydrogenating heptanal made by castor oil pyrolysis, or from petrochemical oxo synthesis on short olefins. Succinic acid comes either from glucose fermentation or from hydrogenating maleic anhydride, which is still the larger share of supply.

In plain English

A skin-conditioning emollient ester made from succinic acid and a synthetic seven-carbon alcohol. Succinic acid can come from fermented plant sugars or from petroleum, so the natural content varies by supplier.
