Terms of use.

The short version: the ingredient data is yours to reuse with credit, the scores are a measurement of origin and nothing more, and they are published without warranty. The free tools are yours to use, what you put in them stays yours, and checking what they give you is your job.

Effective · this version adds the free tools (section 6)

1. Who these terms are with

isthatnatural.com (“Is That Natural?”, “we”, “us”) is operated from Canada, as are its free tools at allergen.isthatnatural.com and hlb.isthatnatural.com. By using the site or its tools you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use them.

2. Using the site

You may read, search, link to and quote this site for any lawful purpose, personal or commercial. You may not interfere with its operation or security, attempt to gain access to parts of it that are not public, or place automated load on it heavy enough to degrade it for other readers. Nothing on the site is for sale. The allergen calculator asks you to register a free account; section 6 covers the tools.

3. The ingredient data is open

The ingredient data — names, identifiers, NOI values, tiers, categories and the accompanying rationales — is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). You may copy, redistribute, adapt and build on it, including commercially, provided you give attribution in the form:

Is That Natural?, isthatnatural.com

Link back to the site where the medium allows it, indicate whether you changed anything, and do not present your adaptation as our work or imply that we endorse it. The rest of the site — the design, code, illustrations, diagrams and the written pages such as this one — is not covered by that licence and remains our property.

4. No warranty

The site, its data and its tools are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Scores rest on published facts and on assumptions about feedstocks and synthesis routes; those facts can be wrong and those assumptions can change, so entries are revised as better information arrives and past values are not guaranteed to be current. See corrections and changelog. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from reliance on the site, its data, its tools or anything derived from them.

5. What an NOI score is not

An NOI is a mass fraction: the share of an ingredient that traces back to a natural feedstock, calculated with the method described on how we calculate NOI. It is not a statement about safety, toxicity, purity, quality, efficacy, sustainability or environmental impact, and a high score does not make an ingredient good for you or a low one bad.

ISO 16128 is a method for calculating natural and natural-origin content. It is not a certification scheme and it certifies nothing about safety. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by or accredited by the International Organization for Standardization or by any regulator.

Nothing here is regulatory, legal or medical advice. If you are making a claim on a label, placing a product on a market, or deciding what to put on your skin, you remain responsible for your own compliance work and your own professional advice.

6. The free tools

The formula scorer on this site, the allergen calculator at allergen.isthatnatural.com and the HLB calculator at hlb.isthatnatural.com are free. Section 4 applies to them as it does to the data.

7. Certification and assessment services — outline terms

If you engage us to assess a formula or to certify a product, the following apply in outline. The terms of a specific engagement are agreed in writing before work starts, and those prevail if they differ.

See the services page for what each option covers.

8. Other sites

This site links to external sources such as PubChem and the EU CosIng register. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or availability.

9. Changes

We may update these terms. The current version is always on this page with its effective date, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia, Canada, and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. The courts of British Columbia have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.

11. Contact

Questions about these terms, the data licence or a certification: info@isthatnatural.com, or via the contact page. See also the privacy policy.
