How we scored it
Inorganic mineral salt Na2S2O4; sodium and sulfur/oxygen atoms are mineral-derived per ISO 16128, no organic fragment to split.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Sodium hydrosulfite is manufactured from sulfur dioxide (mineral/volcanic or recovered industrial sulfur) reduced with zinc or sodium formate, combined with sodium. No organic petrochemical fragment is present.
In plain English
A mineral-derived reducing agent used in cosmetics to control thickness and act as a reducing agent, for example in some hair or lightening products. It is manufactured from sulfur dioxide and sodium.
