Is Polyacrylate-22 natural?

No. Every monomer and reactant in this multi-step polymer (IPDI, adipic acid, neopentyl glycol, HEMA, acrylates, AMP) traces to petrochemical feedstocks.

How we scored it

Built from isophorone diisocyanate, an adipic acid/neopentyl glycol polyester, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, acrylic/methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and aminomethylpropanol — every monomer/reactant is petrochemical → 0.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Built in stages from isophorone diisocyanate, an adipic acid/neopentyl glycol polyester, hydroxyethyl methacrylate and acrylic/methacrylic acid/methyl methacrylate monomers, all petrochemical, then partially neutralized with aminomethylpropanol. No natural-origin alternative exists for this engineered polymer.

In plain English

A complex synthetic polymer built up in several chemical steps from petrochemical building blocks including a diisocyanate, acrylates and methacrylates. Used in hair styling and nail products to form a flexible, long-lasting film.

CosIng definition: Polyacrylate-22 is a complex polymer that is prepared by first reacting isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI with a copolymer made from Adipic Acid and Neopentyl Glycol. The isocyanate groups on the resulting polymer are then reacted with hydroxyethyl methacrylate followed by quenching with ethanol to eliminate residual urethane groups. Finally, the polymer above is copolymerized with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and methyl methacrylate, then partially neutralized with aminomethyl propanol (AMP)
