How we scored it
Heartwood extract: haematoxylin and related polyphenols are plant-derived; solvent leaves no mass. Natural mass fraction 1/1 = 1.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Dominant feedstock is logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum) heartwood chips, extracted with hot water or solvent to give a dye extract. No synthetic route exists for the extract; the dye has long been a natural colourant.
In plain English
A colourant. It is a dye extract made from the heartwood of the logwood tree, a Central American tree whose main pigment precursor, haematoxylin, oxidises to a purple-black colour.
CosIng definition: Haematoxylum Campechianum Wood Extract is the extract of the wood of the tree, Haematoxylum campechianum, Leguminosae.
