How we scored it
D-Glucono-1,5-lactone is the direct oxidation/lactonization product of glucose; every carbon traces to glucose. No petrochemical fragment. 100% natural mass.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
How it’s made
Where it comes from
Produced by glucose oxidase fermentation/oxidation of corn- or starch-derived glucose to gluconic acid, which spontaneously forms the lactone. No significant petrochemical route exists.
In plain English
A mild exfoliating and metal-binding ingredient made from corn sugar via fermentation. It occurs naturally in honey, fruit and wine, and helps condition skin and stabilise formulas.
