Is Acetyl Zingerone natural?

It depends. Vanillin gives the aromatic vanillyl half (natural if from lignin or ferulic acid, petrochemical if from guaiacol); the pentanedione half comes from petrochemical acetone and acetic acid chemistry.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

RouteFeedstockNOIShareNotes
Guaiacol-derived vanillin + acetylacetonepetrochemical guaiacol and acetylacetone0.00~85%
Lignin or ferulic-acid vanillin + acetylacetonewood lignin or rice-bran ferulic acid for the vanillyl half; petrochemical acetylacetone0.58~15%
Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Vanillyl C8H9O2 137.2 natural only if lignin or ferulic-acid vanillin; acetylacetone-derived C5H7O2 99.1 petrochemical. Lignin route 137.2 / 236.3 = 0.58; guaiacol route 0.0. The higher route is shown; the routes table gives both.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Made by condensing vanillin with acetylacetone and hydrogenating the product; most vanillin is guaiacol-derived, so the guaiacol route is assumed dominant. Lignin- or ferulic-acid-derived vanillin gives a partly natural product.

In plain English

An antioxidant and metal-binding ingredient modelled on zingerone from ginger. It is made in a laboratory from vanillin and acetylacetone rather than extracted from ginger.
