How we scored it

Dominant supply is direct isolation from clove bud oil, already about 85-90% eugenol; no petrochemical fragment in that route.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Produced mainly by steam-distilling clove buds or leaves and isolating eugenol from the oil. A minor petrochemical synthetic route from guaiacol exists but is not dominant for this ingredient.

In plain English

A warm, clove-scented ingredient used in fragrances, isolated from clove oil. A small amount is made synthetically, but most comes directly from cloves.
