Why the score varies
This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.
| Route | Feedstock | NOI | Share | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| chemical total synthesis | petrochemical intermediates (e.g. beta-ionone route) | 0.00 | roughly half of global supply | |
| algae extraction / fungal fermentation | Dunaliella salina algae or Blakeslea trispora fermentation | 1.00 | roughly half, growing for natural claims |
How we scored it
Where it comes from
CI 75130 (Carotene) is produced either by large-scale chemical synthesis from petrochemical intermediates (e.g. BASF/DSM processes) or by extraction from Dunaliella salina algae or fermentation using Blakeslea trispora fungus. Natural routes are favoured for 'naturally derived' claims but do not clearly dominate total volume.
In plain English
A yellow-orange colour pigment, chemically the same as the beta-carotene in carrots. It can be made naturally from algae or a fermentation fungus, or built synthetically from petrochemical building blocks - both routes are common.
CosIng definition: CI 75130 is classed chemically as a carotenoid colour. It conforms to the formula:
