Is C9-12 Alkane natural?

It depends. Marketed as either a bio-based linear alkane from natural fatty-acid decarboxylation or a petroleum paraffin distillate, depending on supplier.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Two routes: (a) decarboxylation of natural coconut/palm fatty acids → linear alkane, all carbons natural, 1.0; (b) petroleum n-paraffin distillate, 0.0. The CosIng 'linear alkane' wording favours the natural decarboxylation route used by modern bio-alkane emollients.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Increasingly produced by catalytic decarboxylation of natural coconut/palm-kernel medium-chain fatty acids, yielding a fully natural-origin linear alkane. An older petroleum-paraffin-distillate route also exists under the same generic INCI name.

In plain English

A lightweight, silicone-like emollient made of simple hydrocarbon chains. Depending on the supplier, it's made either from coconut/palm fatty acids via a green-chemistry process, or refined from petroleum.

CosIng definition: C9-12 Alkane is a mixture of linear alkanes with 9 to 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain.
