How we scored it
Zinc salt of hyaluronic acid: fermentation-derived polysaccharide (1.0) + Zn2+ mineral counter-ion (1.0). Supplied formula/IUPAC (C42H82O2 fatty ester) contradicts the CosIng description; description trusted per instructions.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Hyaluronic acid is produced by bacterial fermentation (e.g. Streptococcus) then salt-exchanged with a zinc source to give the zinc salt. No petrochemical route exists for this ingredient.
In plain English
A moisturizing, skin-protecting ingredient combining hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar molecule that holds water in skin, with zinc. It's made by fermenting sugars with bacteria, then adding a zinc salt.
CosIng definition: Zinc Hyaluronate is the zinc salt of Hyaluronic Acid.
