How we scored it
Extract of whole ashwagandha plant; all constituents (including withanolides) are plant-derived (n=1); solvent leaves no mass. 1 / 1 = 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Cultivated ashwagandha, mainly from India, is extracted whole with water, alcohol or a glycol and concentrated. No synthetic route exists; any carrier solvent is declared separately on the INCI.
In plain English
An extract of the whole ashwagandha plant, used in skincare for its skin-conditioning role. It is made by steeping the plant in a solvent and concentrating the liquid.
CosIng definition: Withania Somnifera Extract is the extract of the whole plant Withania somnifera, Solanaceae.
