Is Tocopheryl Ferulate natural?

It depends. Both parts are route-dependent: tocopherol from soy distillate or synthesised from trimethylhydroquinone and isophytol, and ferulic acid from rice bran or synthesised from vanillin and malonic acid.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Tocopheryl C29H49O2 430 + feruloyl C10H9O3 177 = 607 Da. Natural d-alpha-tocopherol with rice-bran ferulic acid 607/607 = 1.0; synthetic both 0.0; mixed routes 0.71 or 0.29.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Dominant route is presumed synthetic because dl-alpha-tocopherol supplies most vitamin E and synthetic ferulic acid is common, but actual supply is unclear. A natural route uses soy-derived d-alpha-tocopherol with rice-bran ferulic acid.

In plain English

An antioxidant ester that joins vitamin E (tocopherol) to ferulic acid, a compound found in rice bran and other plants. Vitamin E can come from soybean oil or be synthesised, and ferulic acid can be extracted from rice bran or made from vanillin.

CosIng definition: Tocopheryl Ferulate is the ester of Tocopherol and Ferulic Acid
