Is Tocophersolan natural?

It depends. Tocopherol is route-dependent on this site and its esters inherit that, so a single value is not appropriate. The large ethoxylate chain dominates the mass and is petrochemical either way, which is why even the natural-tocopherol route stays low.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Tocophersolan weighs about 1499.7 Da: the tocopheryl fragment 429.7 Da, the succinic linker 84.1 Da and the 22-unit PEG chain 985.9 Da. With natural vegetable-oil tocopherol the value is 429.7/1499.7 = 0.29. With synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol nothing is natural origin, 0.00. The PEG chain is petrochemical on every route.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Vitamin E is esterified with succinic acid, then reacted with about 22 moles of ethylene oxide. The tocopherol is sourced either from vegetable oil deodoriser distillate or synthesised from petrochemical isophytol; the PEG chain is petrochemical in both cases.

In plain English

A water-soluble form of vitamin E, also called Vitamin E TPGS, made by attaching a long chain of ethylene oxide to vitamin E succinate. Used as an antioxidant and solubiliser.
