How we scored it
Ascorbic acid (glucose fermentation, natural) tetraesterified with hexyldecanol (C16 fatty alcohol, oleochemical) → total/total = 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Made by esterifying ascorbic acid, from fermented glucose, with hexyldecanol, a branched fatty alcohol typically produced from natural coconut- or palm-derived alcohols via Guerbet condensation. A petrochemical Ziegler-alcohol route also exists.
In plain English
An oil-soluble form of vitamin C used to condition skin and help protect against oxidative stress. It is made by combining ascorbic acid, from fermented glucose, with a branched fatty alcohol derived from vegetable oil.
Structure
[(2S)-2-[(2R)-3,4-bis(2-hexyldecanoyloxy)-5-oxo-2H-furan-2-yl]-2-(2-hexyldecanoyloxy)ethyl] 2-hexyldecanoate
