How we scored it
Inorganic mineral salt NaNO3; sodium and nitrate ions are both mineral-derived, no organic fragment.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Sodium nitrate occurs naturally as Chile saltpeter and is also manufactured by neutralising nitric acid (from ammonia oxidation) with sodium. Either way it is an inorganic mineral salt with no petrochemical carbon.
In plain English
A mineral salt used in oral care products, for example as a desensitising or soothing ingredient. It occurs naturally as a mineral deposit and is also made industrially from ammonia-derived nitric acid and sodium.
