Is Sodium Cocoyl Amino Acids natural?

Yes. The cocoyl chain comes from coconut or palm kernel oil, the amino acids from protein hydrolysate and sodium from mineral salts, so every retained fragment is natural origin.

How we scored it

Cocoyl acyl (C12H23O 183 Da, coconut fatty acid) + amino-acid residues of protein hydrolysate + Na (mineral); acid-chloride chlorine and reagents leave. All retained mass natural = 1.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Coconut or palm kernel fatty acid is converted to its acid chloride, condensed with amino acids from a wheat, soy, oat or collagen protein hydrolysate and neutralised with sodium hydroxide. No commercially significant petrochemical route exists for this protein-hydrolysate grade.

In plain English

A cleansing agent (surfactant) that foams in facial and body washes and shampoos. It is made by attaching coconut fatty acid to amino acids from hydrolysed plant protein and neutralising with sodium.

CosIng definition: Acid chlorides, coco, reaction products with protein hydrolyzates
