How we scored it
Avg C9: alkyl-O 143.3 + SO3Na 103.1 = 246.3 Da; oleochemical caprylyl/capryl alcohol, sulfate and Na all natural: 246.3 / 246.3 = 1.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Made by sulfating C8-10 fatty alcohols from coconut or palm kernel oil with SO3 and neutralising with NaOH. Ziegler or oxo C8-10 alcohols exist (supplier note), but oleochemical origin is assumed for cosmetic grades.
In plain English
A short-chain foaming cleansing agent (surfactant) used to lift dirt and boost foam in washes. It is made from coconut or palm kernel fatty alcohols that are sulfated and neutralised with sodium.
CosIng definition: Sulfuric acid, mono-C8-10-alkyl esters, sodium salts
