Is Sodium C16-18 Olefin Sulfonate natural?

Mostly not. Sulfonate and sodium are mineral; the C16-18 olefin chain comes from ethylene oligomerisation (alpha-olefins) or paraffin dehydrogenation, both petrochemical.

How we scored it

Representative C17 sodium alkene sulfonate C17H33SO3Na 340.5: SO3Na 103.0 mineral natural; C17H33 chain 237.4 from petrochemical alpha-olefin. 103.0 / 340.5 = 0.30.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Alpha-olefin from ethylene oligomerisation is sulfonated with SO3 and neutralised with NaOH, giving alkene and hydroxyalkane sulfonates. Oleochemically derived olefin sulfonates are not a significant commercial supply.

In plain English

A cleansing surfactant that makes foam and lifts oil and dirt in shampoos, body washes and similar products. It is made by sulfonating long-chain olefin hydrocarbons, usually from ethylene, and neutralising with sodium hydroxide.

CosIng definition: Sulfonic acids, C16-18-alkane hydroxy and C16-18-alkene, sodium salts
