How we scored it
Aqueous steam distillate of rosemary: water (n=1) plus dissolved plant volatiles (n=1); no petrochemical atoms. 1.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Dominant feedstock is rosemary leaves and tops, steam-distilled; the hydrosol is the aqueous layer left after the essential oil separates. No commercially significant synthetic route exists.
In plain English
The water collected when rosemary is steam-distilled, also called rosemary hydrosol. It is used for a light herbal scent and as a water-phase ingredient in toners, hair mists and rinses. It comes entirely from rosemary plant material and water.
CosIng definition: Rosmarinus Officinalis Water is an aqueous solution of the steam distillate obtained from the Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis L., Lamiaceae
