How we scored it
Trihydroxybenzene from thermal decarboxylation of gallic acid (plant tannin hydrolysate); heat/alkali leave no added mass. 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Pyrogallol is traditionally produced by heating gallic acid, obtained by hydrolysing plant tannins from gallnuts or tara pods, until it loses carbon dioxide. A minor alternative synthetic aromatic route may also exist.
In plain English
A hair-dye ingredient traditionally made by heating gallic acid, itself extracted from plant tannins in gallnuts, until it loses carbon dioxide. The carbon skeleton originates in the plant material.
Structure
benzene-1,2,3-triol
