Is Polyamide-8 natural?

Mostly. Hydrogenated dilinoleic (dimer) acid and stearyl end-caps are oleochemical; ethylenediamine and neopentyl glycol are petrochemical.

How we scored it

Assume 2:1:1 dimer-acid:diamine:diol backbone: 2x567 Da hydrogenated dimer acid (natural) vs 60 Da ethylenediamine + 104 Da neopentyl glycol (petrochemical); 1134/1298 = 0.87.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

The dimer acid backbone is made by dimerising and hydrogenating natural linoleic acid from vegetable oil. Ethylenediamine and neopentyl glycol, the other backbone monomers, are petrochemical synthetics.

In plain English

A film-forming resin used in nail polish and lipstick, built mainly from a vegetable-oil-derived fatty dimer acid plus two lab-made building blocks. Gives products flexibility, shine and a smooth skin feel.

CosIng definition: Polyamide-8 is a copolymer of ethylenediamine, neopentyl glycol and hydrogenated dilinoleic acid end-blocked with stearyl alcohol.
