Is Phytol natural?

It depends. Phytol can be released from natural chlorophyll by hydrolysis or built by petrochemical total synthesis for vitamin E/K manufacture, and it is unclear which route supplies cosmetic-grade material.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Whole-molecule routes: chlorophyll hydrolysis (plant-derived, natural, 1.0) vs petrochemical total synthesis (vitamin E/K intermediate route, 0.0); dominant cosmetic-grade route unclear.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Phytol is a side-chain fragment of chlorophyll and can be obtained naturally by hydrolysing chlorophyll from plant biomass. Large volumes are also made synthetically from petrochemical feedstocks as an intermediate for vitamin E and K1.

In plain English

A natural-scented diterpene alcohol found in chlorophyll, used as a fragrance and skin-conditioning ingredient. It can be extracted from plant chlorophyll or made synthetically.
