How we scored it
Disaccharide/polysaccharide of glucose + galactose, both natural sugars; fermentation product of milk by kefir grain microorganisms; no petrochemical fragment.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Kefiran is produced by fermenting milk with kefir grain microorganisms (e.g. Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens), yielding a glucose-galactose polysaccharide. No alternative synthetic route is used commercially.
In plain English
A sugar-based gel-forming ingredient made by fermenting milk with kefir grains. It is used in skincare to help condition and soften skin.
CosIng definition: Kefiran is a disaccharide consisting of Glucose and Galactose
