Why the score varies
This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.
| Route | Feedstock | NOI | Share | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extraction from hinoki, hiba or Taiwan cypress heartwood oil | Cupressaceae wood oil | 1.00 | ~40% (uncertain) | |
| Chemical synthesis via cyclopentadiene-type ring expansion | petrochemical C3-C5 building blocks | 0.00 | ~60% (uncertain) |
How we scored it
Where it comes from
Natural hinokitiol is extracted from the heartwood or wood oil of hinoki, hiba or Taiwan cypress (Cupressaceae). Synthetic hinokitiol from petrochemical cyclopentadiene-type intermediates is also commercial, and which route dominates cosmetic supply could not be established, so confidence is low.
In plain English
A compound first isolated from the wood of Japanese and Taiwanese cypress trees. In products it is listed for reducing static and conditioning hair. Supply comes either from extraction of cypress wood oil or from chemical synthesis in a factory.
