How we scored it
Microbial fermentation exopolysaccharide from Sphingomonas elodea grown on plant sugars; this site's method fermentation-product/gum convention. 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Produced by aerobic fermentation of the bacterium Sphingomonas elodea on a glucose growth medium, then recovered by alcohol precipitation. No synthetic route exists.
In plain English
A gelling agent made by fermenting sugar with bacteria. The bacteria naturally produce this polysaccharide, which is purified afterward for use as a thickener in cosmetics.
