How we scored it
Whole molecule is a fermentation metabolite of soy isoflavones; fermentation products = 1.0 by this site's convention.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Equol is produced by fermenting soy germ isoflavones (daidzein) with specific bacterial strains. A chemical (non-fermentation) synthesis route exists in research settings but is not the commercial cosmetic-ingredient route.
In plain English
A plant-derived antioxidant compound made when bacteria ferment soy isoflavones. Used in skin and hair care for its antioxidant and conditioning properties.
Structure
(3S)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-7-ol
