Is Dipalmoylethyl Hydroxyethylmonium Methosulfate natural?

Mostly. Palmitoyl groups come from palm fatty acid and sulfate is mineral; the triethanolamine-derived head group (ethylene oxide, ammonia) and both methyl groups (methanol) are petrochemical.

How we scored it

Palmitoyl 2 x 239.4 = 478.8 + OSO3 96.1 = 574.9 natural; TEA-derived N-methyl tris(ethylene) core 162.2 + methyl 15.0 petrochemical. 574.9 / 752.1 = 0.76.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Triethanolamine is esterified with palm-derived palmitic acid and quaternised with dimethyl sulfate to give the methosulfate esterquat. Commercial grades are mono-, di- and tri-ester mixtures, so the diester value is nominal.

In plain English

A conditioning agent for hair rinses and softeners. Its positively charged head sticks to hair, reducing static and tangles, while two palmitic acid tails (from palm oil) add a smooth feel. The head group is made from petrochemical materials.
