Is Chlorothymol natural?

It depends. The thymol skeleton is natural when isolated from thyme or ajowan oil but petrochemical when made from m-cresol; the ring-bonded chlorine is petrochemical in either case.

FunctionAntimicrobial · Antiplaque
FeedstockThymol is chlorinated (for example with sulfuryl chloride)…

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

RouteFeedstockNOIShareNotes
Natural thymolAjowan or thyme essential-oil thymol, then chlorination0.81~20%
Synthetic thymolm-Cresol and propene, then chlorination0.00~80% (dominant)
Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

C10H13ClO 184.7: thymol skeleton C10H13O 149.2 (natural-thymol route) + Cl 35.5 (carbon-bonded, petrochemical). Natural thymol: 149.2/184.7 = 0.81; m-cresol thymol: 0.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Thymol is chlorinated (for example with sulfuryl chloride) to give chlorothymol; the thymol is mostly synthetic from m-cresol and propene. Natural thymol from ajowan or thyme oil is a smaller alternative supply.

In plain English

A chlorinated version of thymol, the phenol found in thyme oil, used for its antimicrobial and deodorant action in oral-care and other products. It is made by adding chlorine to thymol, which is mostly synthetic but can be extracted from thyme or ajowan oil.
