Is Ceramide 2 natural?

It depends. The long-chain fatty acid is oleochemical; the sphingosine/sphinganine base can be fermentation-derived or fully synthesized from petrochemical intermediates.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Fatty acid portion natural in both routes; sphingoid base is either fermentation-derived (natural) or built by total petrochemical synthesis
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Premium biomimetic ceramides use a yeast-fermentation-derived sphingoid base acylated with a natural fatty acid. Lower-cost mass-market ceramides are usually built by total chemical synthesis from petrochemical starting materials.

In plain English

A lipid that mimics fats naturally found in skin, used to condition skin and hair. It can be made from fermentation-derived building blocks or by chemical synthesis, so its origin varies by supplier.

CosIng definition: Ceramide 2 (Retired) is the N-acylated sphingolipid having the erythro structure that conforms generally to the formula, where m has a value ranging from 14 to 28 and n has a value ranging from 10 to 16. The INCI Name, Ceramide 2, originally developed in 1997, was designated with a retired status in 2014. For an interim period of time, trade name assignments formerly published with the INCI Name Ceramide 2 will be retained in the retired monograph, and also published with the new name assignment as either Ceramide NS or Ceramide NG.
