Is Caprylic/Capric/Succinic Triglyceride natural?

It depends. Succinic acid is route-dependent on this site and the esters that carry it inherit that, as the menthyl and diheptyl succinate entries already do. The glycerin and the coconut-type C8 and C10 acids are natural on every route.

Why the score varies

This ingredient is made commercially by more than one route, and ISO 16128 scores the feedstock actually used. Without a supplier certificate of origin the value cannot be claimed.

RouteFeedstockNOIShareNotes
petrochemical succinic acid armvegetable glycerin and C8/C10 fatty acids; maleic anhydride succinic acid0.79~65%only the 101.1 Da succinic arm is petrochemical
fermentation succinic acid armvegetable glycerin and C8/C10 fatty acids; bio-based succinic acid1.00~35%, growing
Ask your supplier. A batch-specific certificate of origin or bio-based carbon test (ASTM D6866) settles which route applies.

How we scored it

Assuming one caprylic, one capric and one succinic arm on glycerin: the glycerin plus C8 and C10 fatty acid portion is 371.5 Da and always natural, and the succinic arm is 101.1 Da, for a total of 472.6 Da. With petrochemical succinic acid the value is 371.5/472.6 = 0.79; with fermentation-derived succinic acid every atom is natural, 1.00.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.

Where it comes from

Vegetable glycerin is esterified with coconut or palm-kernel-derived caprylic and capric acids and with succinic acid. Succinic acid has historically been made from petrochemical maleic anhydride, but a growing share is now fermented from glucose.

In plain English

An emollient ester that gives creams a light, silicone-like skin feel. Most of it comes from coconut or palm-kernel fatty acids and plant glycerin, blended with succinic acid whose plant or petroleum origin varies by supplier.
