How we scored it
Where it comes from
Ascorbic acid is etherified with glycerol-derived units, most plausibly via glycidol or 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol made from epichlorohydrin, where propylene-based supply still dominates. Glycerol-based epichlorohydrin or glycerol carbonate would give a fully natural product, so the supplier must confirm.
In plain English
A water-soluble, stabilised form of vitamin C in which two glycerol-derived units are attached to ascorbic acid; used as an antioxidant and humectant. The ascorbic acid is made by fermenting glucose; the glycerol units come from glycerin or petrochemical epichlorohydrin, depending on the maker.
