How we scored it
Whole essential oil steam-distilled from bark, mainly methyl salicylate; isolated directly from a natural source, not synthesised. 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Made by macerating and steam-distilling sweet birch (Betula lenta) bark. A chemically identical synthetic methyl salicylate exists for fragrance use, but this named oil is the distilled natural product.
In plain English
A fragrance oil steam-distilled from sweet birch bark, giving a wintergreen-like scent. Used to perfume cosmetic products.
CosIng definition: Betula Lenta Bark Oil is the volatile oil obtained from the bark of the Sweet Birch, Betula lenta L., Betulaceae
