How we scored it
Standard amino acid; made enzymatically from fumaric acid + ammonia, or by fermentation/hydrolysate → treated as 100% natural
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Often made by the enzyme aspartase adding ammonia to fumaric acid, or by direct fermentation of plant sugars; fumaric acid feedstock is increasingly bio-based but can be petrochemical.
In plain English
An amino acid used for skin conditioning and moisture retention. Usually produced by fermentation or by an enzyme acting on a small natural-acid building block.
Structure
(2S)-2-aminobutanedioic acid
