How we scored it
Ascorbic acid (glucose-derived, natural) diesterified with 2x palmitic acid (natural fatty acid). Both fragments natural = 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Ascorbyl Dipalmitate is made by esterifying fermentation-derived ascorbic acid with two molecules of palmitic acid from vegetable oil. Both starting materials are natural-origin.
In plain English
An oil-soluble form of vitamin C used as an antioxidant in creams and oils. It is made by attaching two palm-oil-derived fatty acids to plant-sugar-derived vitamin C.
Structure
[(2S)-2-[(2R)-4-hexadecanoyloxy-3-hydroxy-5-oxo-2H-furan-2-yl]-2-hydroxyethyl] hexadecanoate
