The Natural Origin Index (NOI) is a number between 0 and 1 defined by ISO 16128. It measures how much of an ingredient’s molecular structure comes from renewable, biological sources versus petroleum.
A score of 1.0 means every atom of the ingredient traces back to plants, minerals, or microorganisms. A score of 0.0 means it is entirely petrochemical.
Some ingredients can be made via multiple industrial routes, giving them a route-dependent score — the NOI depends entirely on which supplier you use.
