How we scored it
C18H36O unsaturated fatty alcohol; oleochemical from oleic acid reduction; 1.0.
What counts. ISO 16128-2 scores the atoms that remain in the final ingredient. Reagents, solvents, catalysts and protecting groups used during manufacture leave no mass behind and are not counted.
Where it comes from
Oleyl Alcohol is produced by hydrogenating/reducing oleic acid derived from vegetable oils such as olive, canola or palm. A petrochemical Ziegler-alcohol route to C18 alcohols exists but is not the cosmetic-grade norm.
In plain English
A fatty alcohol that conditions skin and hair and helps stabilize emulsions. It's made by reducing oleic acid, a fatty acid abundant in olive, canola and other vegetable oils.
Structure
(Z)-octadec-9-en-1-ol
