Dimethicone is manufactured from silicon metal (Müller-Rochow process with methyl chloride) to give dimethyldichlorosilane, then hydrolyzed and polymerized to the desired chain length. This site's convention scores all silicones 0.0 regardless of this mineral origin.
Dimethicone, a type of silicone polymer, is synthesized through a multi-step process that begins with the production of chlorosilanes. The primary method involves the direct process, also known as the Rochow-Müller process, where silicon metal powder reacts with methyl chloride in the presence of a copper catalyst at elevated temperatures, typically between 250-350°C. This reaction yields a mixture of methylchlorosilanes, with dimethyldichlorosilane ((CH3)2SiCl2) being the most abundant and crucial intermediate for dimethicone.
The methylchlorosilanes are then separated and purified, primarily through fractional distillation, to isolate dimethyldichlorosilane. This purified monomer is subsequently hydrolyzed with water. The hydrolysis reaction breaks the Si-Cl bonds and forms silanol groups (Si-OH). These silanol groups are highly reactive and readily undergo condensation polymerization.
During the condensation polymerization, the silanol groups react with each other, releasing water molecules and forming siloxane bonds (Si-O-Si). This process links the dimethyldisiloxane units together to form long polymer chains. The reaction is typically catalyzed by acids or bases. The degree of polymerization, and thus the molecular weight and viscosity of the final dimethicone product, is controlled by carefully managing the reaction conditions, including the amount of water used, the catalyst, and the reaction time. The resulting polymer chains are then terminated, often with trimethylsilyl end groups, to stabilize the polymer and prevent further uncontrolled polymerization.
In plain English
Dimethicone is a type of silicone that's widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. Think of it as a synthetic polymer made from silicon, which is a common element found in sand. It's designed to create a smooth, silky feel on your skin and hair. Because it doesn't easily mix with water, it forms a light, breathable barrier on the surface.
This barrier is what gives dimethicone its useful properties. It helps to lock in moisture, preventing your skin from drying out, and it can also smooth out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by filling them in temporarily. In hair products, it coats the hair shaft, making it feel smoother, look shinier, and easier to manage by reducing frizz and tangles. It's also used to adjust the texture of products, making them spread more easily and feel less greasy.
